SEA SPORTS
Diving
Scuba diving is an experience like no other. Imagine yourself totally
weightless, free to move in any direction you
wish. They say it is a closest to being in space you can get, without
actually going there!
Imagine yourself in a whole new world, surrounded
by huge schools of fish, beautiful corals and countless other marine
creatures, all willing to share their home with you. Then imagine
yourself able to breath freely underwater, just as easily as you
are right now ... That's Scuba. Trust us... it’s really cool!
'Mencadat Sotong'
“Mencandat sotong” or squid jiggling/hooking is a traditional
method of capturing squids. It is an experience of its own. Fishermen
will leave as early as 3 pm to scramble for the choicest lubok,
where the most squids congregate. Soon after night falls, the fluorescent
lights, powered either by a generator or an auto battery (wet cells)
will be switched on to attract the squids (or calamari, if you haunt
Italian restaurants). The fishermen use multiple hooks (the candat)
with fish bait or they use a jig made of lead with 10 hooks embedded.
This is called a "twist" by the locals.
The candat and the twist are both attached to a
separate fishing line, usually nylon. During the candat season,
squids are easily caught. Depending on the lubok, the fishermen
can catch between 40 to 100 kg of squids per night. The squids hardly
put up a fight although they are known to hose you with their black
ink as soon as you get them on the boat.
Kayak/Canoe
If trekking, snorkelling or diving is not your game, perhaps canoeing
or kayaking will be your choice. The Sea of Perhentian Island is
safe and an enjoyable place to canoe. It is always very pleasurable
to row a canoe or kayak in the evening time when temperature is
cooler. Other than enjoying the scenery, you can view fishes jumping
out from the water to cheer you up.

JUNGLE TREKKING
Perhentian Besar Island is a more laid back than
Perhentian Kecil Island, and is still covered with a lush and relatively
untouched virgin rainforest.
This jungle trail starts from behind Perhentian
Island Resort leading towards a waterfall at Teluk Dalam on the
other side of the island.
Matted with dense vegetation, the jungle is home
to nature's most complex and diverse ecosystems. Plant species such
as climbing vines and palms can be seen in a dazzling forms and
functions, draped together to form a vibrant and interconnected
habitat.
The trip to the jungle requires the full use of
one’s sense to discover all the creatures of the forest. Look
out for wildlife such as several rare fruit bat species, a number
of forest birds (such as Nicobar pigeon, sunbirds, shamas and warblers),
the dusky langur monkey, and the flying lemur.
It is an exhilarating experience hiking through
the rainforest, coming in contact with nature at its most natural.
